VISTA, CA (ANS) -- Just when you think there’s nothing more to read about parenting and family, a new book comes along to prove you wrong. Love & Respect in the Family by Dr. Emerson Eggerichs (Thomas Nelson, Nov '13) is one such book.

In Love & Respect in the Family, best-selling author and family relationship expert, Dr. Eggerichs approaches family dynamics from a slightly different angle than most. He suggests focuses on respect and making it a major component in family relationship. Respect makes a person (especially a child) feel valued. Feeling valued then translates into feeling loved.

Eggerichs explains that although both boys and girls need love and affirmation, they differ in the way they interpret a parent’s words or gestures and equate them with love. The sexes differ in their needs. A smart parent understands the difference and focuses on building up their child’s sense of worth and value (aka self-esteem but approached from a biblical viewpoint not a humanistic viewpoint) through manifesting respect.

Respect builds character in a child by modeling how others are to be treated. Coddling a child—especially an older child—can sometimes be destructive. Honoring his or her ability, space, capacity…is usually constructive. But respect does not mean ignoring areas that need to be disciplined. Rather, it means working with the child sensitively in accordance with what the Bible teaches.

Love & Respect in the Family releases in November, just in time for Christmas. It would make a great gift for parents, grandparents and anyone who works with children and families.
