ALBUQUERQUE, NM (ANS) -- “The Ultimate Life,” a touching story of hope and family values is the follow-up to the heartwarming film and best-seller “The Ultimate Gift.”

Between the pressure of running a foundation started by his late grandfather, being sued by his greedy extended family, and seeing his beloved Alexia leave on an extended mission trip to Haiti, Jason Stevens' world is unraveling.

When it looks like he may lose it all, he finds his grandfather's journal. With everything he loves hanging in the balance Jason embarks on a journey into the past through the journal to learn what it means to live “The Ultimate Life.”

With everything he loves hanging in the balance, Jason hopes he can discover “The Ultimate Life,” which reminds us that some things are worth more than money!

A Chat with Drew Waters

I recently interviewed Drew Waters, who plays Jason’s grandfather, Howard “Red” Stevens in the movie. (Red was played by James Garner in “The Ultimate Gift.”)

I asked Waters what attracted him to the role of Red. Waters said while acting a character formerly played by James Garner was great, there was more to it than just that.

“I lived Red a little bit,” Waters said. “It was close to home. Character acting is like therapy. It helped me overcome things I was struggling with. Instead of paying (for therapy) you get paid for it (acting).

Waters said the movie’s biggest message is that “family and values are more important than money. That comes and goes.”

He added reflectively, “When Red made his millions there was no one there to enjoy it with him.”

Waters said it’s important to pursue your passion-not just money-and think about the footprint you’d like to leave on society. “Do you (only) want to be known as the man who made millions of dollars?”

Waters said he has friends who struggle with this. He said, “You can hurry up and make all the money in the world but remember you’ve only got one life”

“The Ultimate Life” was distributed nationally in theaters on Sept. 6 2013. It is now available on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital HD.

Waters said if people want more family friendly movies like “The Ultimate Life”, it’s very important they show their support with their pocket books. “It will take people’s actions-not just words. Every time you watch a movie, you’re ‘feeding the movies,’” Waters said, referring to the fact that Hollywood will respond to what is a financial success.

The movie has gotten good reviews.

Focus on The Family’s Plugged-In said, “The Ultimate Life” poignantly reminds us that our family and our relational legacy are of far greater worth than any worldly goal we might strive to achieve.”

The Dove Foundation said, “This film features the themes of sacrifice and hard work and recognizing family as a treasure ... It is an entertaining movie with a message.”

Waters (www.imdb.com/name/nm1988958) is passionate about bringing quality movies to the entertainment industry.

He has formed a new company, Argentum Entertainment, with his business partner Erin Bethea. According to Waters’ Facebook page (www.facebook.com/drewwaters13) “Argentum Entertainment seeks to bring a new level of value to the entertainment business with a promising slate of films in the works.”

Waters also had a part in the recently concluded and phenomenally successful AMC series “Breaking Bad.” He was in the show’s second season as Paul Tyree.

The show was filmed in, and featured, Albuquerque. Waters said he enjoyed the city and liked the people. However, he added, “I didn’t have a clue that (the show) would be as big.”

Red or Green?

Answering the question asked of all visitors to New Mexico,”What was your favorite chile?” Waters said he liked a red-green mix, but isn’t a “big spicy guy.”

So are there any other things about Waters we don’t know? Waters told me a couple of things not so well known.

The “oil” with which he was sprayed down in “The Ultimate Life” was really chocolate syrup.

His daughters laugh at him because he can’t roll his tongue. “They think I’m weird,” Waters said.
